China threatens Canada with ‘grave consequences’ if Huawei CFO not freed

China has warned Canada there’d be severe consequences when it did not immediately release Huawei’s chief financial officer, calling the fact “extremely nasty”.

Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada on 1 December and faces extradition into the U . s ., which alleges that she covered up her company’s links with a firm that attempted to sell equipment to Iran despite sanctions.

The executive would be the daughter of Huawei’s founder.

If extradited towards US, Meng would face charges of conspiracy to defraud multiple loan companies, a Canadian court heard on Friday, using a maximum sentence of Thirty years for each and every charge.

No decision was reached for the extradition hearing after nearly six hours of arguments and counter-arguments, as well as the hearing was adjourned until Monday.

China’s official news agency Xinhua reported Le summoned the Canadian ambassador, John McCallum, in protest and urged Ottawa to discharge Meng immediately or face “grave consequences that the Canadian side should be attributed for”.
