‘It’s a free-for-all’: shutdown brings turmoil to beloved US national parks

Campers at Joshua Tree national park in southern California’s deserts were reporting squabbles as different visitors laid says it will sites, without rangers handy to adjudicate, said Ethan Feltges, who operates the Coyote Corner gift shop outside Joshua Tree. Feltges along with other entrepreneurs around Joshua Tree had entered into the space whenever possible, hauling trailers to the park to empty overflowing trash bins and sweeping and stocking restrooms who were still open, Feltges said.

“The whole community originates together,” Feltges said. “Everyone loves the park. And there’s a lots of companies that really need the park.”

Most visitors were respectful of the desert wilderness and park facilities, Joshua Tree’s superintendent, David Smith, said from a statement.

But some are seizing within the lack of park staffers to push off road illegally and otherwise damage the park, and even relieving themselves in view, a park statement said. Joshua Tree claimed it would begin closing some campgrounds for a lot of but day use. Meanwhile, some visitors have strung Christmas lights within the protected Joshua trees, several of which are ages old, the Los Angeles Times reported.

At Yosemite, Snider, the area resident, said crowds of visitors were driving within the park to have advantage of free admission, with simply a number of park rangers working along with a small selection of of restrooms open.
